Tri-County Head Start

About Us

Who we are…

Since our inception, in 1972, we have served over 40,000 children. Tri-County Head Start currently serves 908 children from birth to 5 years of age, and their families in Berrien, Cass, and Van Buren Counties in both our home-based and center-based programs.

What we do…

At Tri-County Head Start we are more than a preschool, we offer wrap-around services for the children and families we serve, in addition to the high-quality early education we provide.  Our education team prepares children for Kindergarten and future school success, and our Family Advocates link families to resources in the communities, ensure that children are up-to-date on their medical and dental appointments, and help families set and achieve goals.

Our Mission:

To be a vibrant and progressive educational agency supporting the development of children 0-5 years of age while promoting healthy family functioning for Head Start children and families in Berrien, Cass, and Van Buren Counties.

Our Vision:

To partner with families, staff and communities in providing quality services with compassion and professionalism to achieve stability, guidance and a positive educational experience.

Our Philosophy:

There are two factors that distinguish Head Start from any other early childhood programs in the communities we serve; the comprehensiveness of the program and the degree to which parents are involved in all aspects of the program. We believe we must prepare, educate and develop our children and their families to be positive contributors to their community.

We believe all young children are individuals who learn best by actively exploring, interacting with their environment (physical setting and materials) and engaging with quality teaching staff and parents. Caring adults’ help children create, experiment, and question within a positive atmosphere that facilitates problem solving, beginning concepts, and the formation of relationships.

We strive to individualize learning and help each child develop a positive self-image.  We think it is important to attend to children's overall health as we foster social, emotional, physical and cognitive development.
